I was playing fine until one mission when everything froze and the game crashed. I tried to restart but I either get can't find server or DNS request denied. I have checked my internet connection (which is fine) and uninstalled the game and reinstalled it but nothing works. I saw this error reported on another site but no ideas what might be causing it. Any help would be appreciated.

I've lifted this from another board. It seems that it might help answer this issue for some.
This comes directly from Patrick Wyatt, one of the founding members of AN and one of the lead server techs:

We've been noticing that more than some folks seem to be having problems connecting to Guild Wars, even though thousands of others seem to be connecting with no difficulties. The Guild Wars servers aren't overloaded -- I believe that the problem is related to some brands of DSL and cable modems.
I managed to locate someone locally who's having the problem and diagnosed the issue by driving over there. It appears that some of the more recent DSL modems, wireless gateways and home routers appear to have very strict default firewall settings. While we've designed the Guild Wars client program to do nothing more sophisticated that what a web browser is trying to do, the firewall still blocks Guild Wars.
One such box is the ActionTec GT710, which is a fine product if overly restrictive. The default ("medium") as well as the "Low" setting both restrict outbound connections to web browsers. The firewall actually has to be set to Basic in order for Guild Wars to work.
While this is something we can probably work around given a couple of weeks, I expect that many of you would like to play *today*.
So, if you're having problems connecting to Guild Wars, look at the configuration for your DSL/cable modem, and try adjusting the firewall settings. If you're using Windows XP service pack 2 you should be safe even with the DSL/Cable model firewall turned off. I *would not* recommend this if you're using Win95, Win98, WinME or Win2k; fortunately most folks are already using WinXP.
We *will* be looking into a solution that doesn't require a firewall reconfiguration before launch. I apologize for any difficulties you might be having in connecting to the game, and hope that you'll be able to correct the problem and get playing!
Pat
P.S. For most users, in order to connect to your local cable/DSL modem, point your web browser to the following address:
http://192.168.0.1
It won't work for all modems, but it seems to be a pretty common standard for these devices. Also note that you generally have to do this when you're plugged directly into the device; not through your wireless connection.
Coming a tad bit late considering the weekend is over, but it's something to keep in mind for next event.
For those with more router know-how than I- When using a netgear router, under port forwarding it asks for the starting port, ending port and the server ip address. Any idea how to get the ip addy so i can force my router to allow gw? Or am I going about this all wrong?

he said that they are using standard web browsing ports so i dont know if port forwarding would help you out all that much. a temporary workaround would be to disable the firewall or place your pc in the DMZ only when you play the beta.

Start -> Run -> CMD -> ipconfig
This'll give you the ip that you'll want to use there. However, if you have DHCP enabled on your router and you have your Network Connection set to 'Obtain an IP address and DNS Server address automatically', then this number will change and you'd have to change the config in your router to match. To avoid this, you'll have to set a hard (unchangeable) ip for your computer. If the gateway listed in ipconfig is 192.168.0.1, then you'll want to hard set your computer to any ip between 192.168.0.2-255. This is necessary if you want to start forwarding ports. I have no idea what port(s) GW uses to finish your configuration.
One last obvious point though,...you're not talking about connecting now that the Dec. beta event is over, are you? Everyone got cut off at around midnight PST Sunday and we won't be able to play again until, what, Jan. 7th?
...he said that they are using standard web browsing ports.
He did? All I see in the above referenced text is,...
'...GW doesn't do anything more sophiticated that what a web browser would do.'
Sorry, I'm not trying to point a finger and say, "You're Wrong!!" or anything, but there's no mention there of what ports GW uses. Is there mention in the original document that this was lifted from?
