Epilogue
Cynn peaked out over the rocky hilltops. Was this really Ascalon that once were so green?
Was this barren wasteland really all that was left of her beloved Ascalon?
She took a step closer to the edge and kicked a little stone down.
It was all the Charr’s fault. Those beasts.
Devona Mhenlo and Aidan had been sent out do some routine mission.
Cynn decided not to tag along she wanted some privacy and time to think after that which just happened. She walked a bit down the hill again when some devourers came up.
”Devourers? Is that all?” Cynn thought while she fired fireballs and lightning bolts at the now half-dead Devourers. Then it happened. A messenger shouted to her: “Mistress Cynn. The prince and your friends are establishing a new settlement in Kryta.”
Cynn nodded and the messenger walked back to Ascalon “What a routine mission. Oh hi Cynn we’re just gonna flee from Ascalon without you and tell you it’s a routine mission and never coming back to get you” She thought while she imitated Devona’s voice in her head.
But she wasn’t going to let them have all the fun in Kryta while she rotted here.
Apparently they had done a pretty good job at clearing the way to Kryta so she took some warm clothes on. She then took some food and money with her for the journey and headed up the shiverpeaks. She had to fight a few stone summit scouts but they had done a pretty good job of clearing the way. She finally got to the Frost gate where she could get to Kryta from when she saw her whole party lying dead. She could see axe marks and arrows in their chest. Apparently there were some guilds that sympathized with the Stone summit and had attacked her party.
She felt sorry but at the same time glad over that they didn’t live to cheat on her again.
What’s happening to me? I’m not even angry or upset over my friends died Cynn thought while trying to feel something but she couldn’t. She felt nothing.
I’m such a horrible person I feel nothing even though my friends are dead. She kept thinking while she ran to the new Ascalon settlement with a little bit of help from some of the adventurers in Lions Arch.
Finally. Ascalon settlement Cynn thought as she walked in.
Chapter 1
Cynn walked in and saw a few farmers fight against some undead.
She immediately cast a very focused and concentrated firebolt making one of the skeletons burn.
1 down… uh... 4 to go Cynn thought to herself. While firing all kinds of spells against the skeletons.
She never was good with numbers. After depleting her spiritual strength she had to use her staff.
She had forgotten how horrible it was.
I better head to Lion’s Arch tomorrow to buy a new one She thought while the soldiers finished off the remaining skeletons. “Thanks,” they shouted. She simply nodded and walked up a hill letting her fall she lay there comfortably and let sleep claim her.
She woke up early next morning. She always did. She hurried to Lions Arch to buy a new staff. Luckily she had brought some gold from Ascalon. She went in Lions arch and looked around.
She couldn’t really find a staff that suited her, so she bought some materials she knew was used to make a staff. Ectoplasm, wood and a diamond.
The diamond was quite expensive so for the last gold she had she bought some supplies for the settlement and partied up with some adventurers to deliver it.
There’s far too much stuff for me to carry it and the way is clear so I won’t have to help them at all.
Cynn thought and chuckled at her own cunning.
”What’s so funny?” One of the adventurers asked. His name was Aryl.
“Nothing” Cynn asked in a bored voice to make them believe her.
After walking for some time Cynn and her party finally got to the settlement and unloaded the supplies. The villagers thanked Cynn. She didn’t stay to hear it though. Her course was for the hilltop she slept on earlier. It was always hot in Kryta due to the volcanos nearby so it was always hot enough to sleep outside. Cynn took a bite of the food she had bought and relaxed.
The next thing she remembers is being waked up by Aryl because there’s a battle in the settlement.
“Coming,” Cynn said and got on her feet. Aryl was firing arrows at a bunch of skeletons.
Cynn got up and started burning the skeletons up with fireballs and fire rains.
After the attacking bunch of skeletons had been defeated Aryl said: “They’re dead. If you can consider destroying a skeleton killing it that is”
Cynn chuckled before seeing some more undead and shouting “They’re coming in waves.”
Aryl started firing arrows but Cynn shouted: “They’re out of your range. Don’t waste arrows.”
Those were wise words. Aryl only had about thirty arrows left.
Cynn relaxed to replenish her spiritual strength while Aryl put a arrow on his bow and waited.
He didn’t have to wait long. Another group of skeletons stormed the settlement giving the few soldiers protecting the encampment still alive a hard time.
Aryl started to fire arrows he had set fire to and Cynn threw all kinds of damaging spells at them.
After about ten minutes of fighting the last skeleton is finally struck down and Aryl no longer has any arrows left. He draws a sword and shouts to Cynn: “Go back and get some help.”
Cynn starts running throwing fireballs and spells at the invading undead while she moves farther away.
I need to hurry. He won’t last long against those undead. Cynn thought as she ran.
About halfway to Lions arch Cynn sees a group of white mantle knights. “Please follow me. The new Ascalon settlement is being attacked” She begged them desperate to not loose the last thing she lived for. The leader of the group nodded and they followed Cynn.
When they came to the settlement Most of the farmers had been killed and many of the building were burning. “NOO!” Cynn screamed and fell on her knees. Then she felt a sharp pain in her head and then everything was black…
------------------------------------------------------
Cynn woke up somewhere dark. She couldn’t see anything but she caught a few segments of whispers:”She is a chosen,” ”We will travel,” ”You should really,” “Tomorrow,”
In her exhausted state Cynn just reached to look around before darkness claimed her yet again.
The next time she woke up it looked like it was dawn. Cynn looked around, she saw Aryl lying unconscious on the ground with cuts bruises and deep wounds all over his body. A closer look in her surroundings showed Cynn that she was in a cage.
Her staff lay out of her reach and a few dark silhouettes were gathered around a campfire.
Cynn thought it was smartest not to shout for help if the silhouettes discovered she was awake they would surely do something and Cynn didn’t feel like passing out again.
She put her hand on Aryls chin trying to wake him up. He moaned softly and shook his head.
He looked up at Cynn and took her hand trying desperately to cling unto something in the real world. “Stay with me,” she begged him. He tried to stay awake but he couldn’t. The pain was overwhelming him. Cynn just now getting real awake noticed that it was cold, really cold.
After she had left the Shiverpeaks she had adjusted to the warm climate of Kryta.
She was shaking, she lay down held her arms around Aryl to absorb some of his body warmth she desperately needed.
Darkness overcame her and the more she tried to fight the more it overwhelmed her. At last she surrendered and gave into it.
She woke up feeling Aryls hands on her shoulders. “Finally, you’re hard to wake up” He whispered into his ears. Even though Cynn was exhausted she chuckled a bit.
“Yea I’m exhausted too. But those silhouettes are just silhouettes." He said pointing to the fire. After he saw Cynn's confused look he added: Not persons. They haven’t moved a muscle for 3 hours now. We can easily break free.” He took a little knife out of his pocket and started cutting in the cage made of bamboos.
Cynn told him to be careful, she then fired a full round of 6 firebolts at the cage making it crackle and break. “Good job,” Aryl commented and dragged Cynn along a road.
“Where are you taking me?” Cynn asked confused.
”I know this place. We’re in the Shiverpeaks. A very special place in the Shiverpeaks dominated neither by the stone summit or the other dwarves.” He replied in a calming voice as he kept dragging Cynn along the road.
”Who’s controlling it then?” Cynn asked as she looked around.
”The white mantle” Aryl muttered and tickled Cynn on the stomach.
”Stop it” Cynn sneered. “We don’t have time for this now.”
The two companions ran together along the road until they finally saw some smoke.
”There must be someone there,” Aryl said while he and Cynn ran as fast as they could.
When they finally reached the smoke they were surprised to see a trashed bonfire still smoking a bit and a portal.
“This must be a portal to the mists,” Cynn said with a voice filled with awe. Aryl nodded.
After some time they decided to step into the mist.
They were both cold and hungry and wouldn’t last much longer in the Shiverpeaks.
When they stepped in they saw their whole life flash before them.
After a few minutes Cynn landed somewhere dark. She looked around and saw mists in all colors.
This must be the mists Cynn thought as she realized how beautiful she thought the mists were.
Better shake it off me. I need to find that ranger Cynn thought as she ran and shouted: “Aryl? Aryl are you there?” No reply came. The only sound was those of her footsteps, breath, and the echo of her voice. Cynn started to get nervous. How am I supposed to get out of here? She asked herself.
She looked around took a deep breath and ran all she could. When she thought she was going to die from exhaustion the ground disappeared under her. She fell.
She saw Aryl getting slung off against her and she took her hand out to grab his, he did the same.
When they passed their hands barely touched each other forming a bond. The mists bound their hands together. Aryl should have proceeded up and Cynn down but they didn’t move, they just stood still in mid-air. “Uhh what happened here?” Aryl asked Cynn.
”It isn’t important let’s just get out of here” Cynn replied.
”How?” Aryl asked. When Cynn was about to answer she saw a white light in the horizon.
They looked at each other and nodded. Then the white light started pulling them in.
This must be the rift They both thought as they drifted towards the light…
---------------------------------------------------------------------
They flew into the white light. They entered and felt a perfect moment.
A moment time could not disturb. Their emotions frozen they looked at each other and smiled.
Then it happened. They felt their bodies stiffen and dive deep into the light. They saw that time went backwards and they dumped in the new Ascalon settlement just before it was to be attacked.
”Here we are again” Cynn said and took a deep breath of Krytas fresh air.
”We better warn the villagers” Aryl said while he checked if he had enough arrows.
”I’ll be able to distract the undead for a good while. Warn the villagers,” Aryl shouted and ran towards the place where the undead attacked last time.
Cynn ran around and warned everybody about the undead.
The villagers started to run towards Lions arch until it was safe for them to return.
Cynn discovered her staff had been returned to her and she started chanting a complex magical ward to keep the undead at bay.
When she was almost finished with the chanting she saw Aryl running towards her shouting: “Hurry up we won’t last long. I put up a few traps to keep them away in a second or two but it won’t last.” As the words were spoken a ghoul attacked him from behind.
Aryl grabbed his sword and drew it through the monster leaving it dead on the ground.
At the same moment Aryl got behind Cynn she finished the chanting.
The undead approached and every time an undead came an, fireball stroke down from the sky and set it on fire.
Bones melting, ghouls burning, and fires burning were the only sounds to be heard in the next few minutes. The undead begun to retreat.
Just as they were out of sight Cynn collapsed exhausted, just before she hit the ground Aryl grabbed her and put her gently down as he fell to sleep too.
Aryl and Cynn woke up the next day seeing that the villagers had returned to the settlement.
”We did it” Cynn smilingly whispered to Aryl.
”Sure thing,” Aryl said. Suddenly he got a very urgent expression and pointed to the horizon. “Undead” He said so low only Cynn could hear it.
Cynn jumped up readied her staff when she got a kick in her butt. “Got ya” Aryl said and laughed.
Cynn jumped on top on him trying to wrestle him down in the mud.
She lost.
When she was lying down the mud Aryl smiled and said; “Looks like miss feminine can’t beat me.”
With those words he put Cynn’s head down the mud and sprinted away.
Cynn sneered as she got on her legs. Throwing a fireball in Aryls head Cynn sprinted up to give him some major pounding only to discover an undead was standing on top of him.
She sneered at the undead and started to fire firebolts and meteors at the undead.
The undead muttered a few words and a shield formed around it reflecting all of Cynn’s spells.
Cynn charged towards the undead being grabbing Aryls sword and thrusted into the undeads heart.
The undead fell down on the ground and whispered with its last breath: “He is…” Then it fell.
Damnit! Cynn thought as she ran over to look if Aryl was alright.
“I’m fine,” he said and coughed weakly.
”No you’re not,” Cynn said and rolled her eyes.
”Really I am,” Aryl replied and took a potion up from his pocket and drank it.
”What was that?” Cynn asked curious
”Poison,” Aryl replied
Cynn grew wide eyed as Aryl continued “Got ya it’s just a healing drink.”
Cynn howled in frustration and walked away.
Aryl saw her sitting on a hill relaxing.
My time has come he thought while he waited for Cynn to fall asleep.
Aryl waited until Cynn finally slept then he sneaked over to her took a vial up and poured it in her mouth. Then he ran away towards the Shiverpeaks.
Cynn woke up feeling dizzy. She couldn’t focus so she asked one of the settlers; “Where’s the ranger?”
”He headed for the Shiverpeaks a few weeks ago”
WEEKS? He must’ve…
…Cynn’s thought were interrupted because her head suddenly started hurting like hell.
Cynn gave a few weak coughs and lay back on the hill falling asleep.
Cynn woke up some later feeling well enough to go get something to drink and eat.
She was starving. She went to get a bit of food and some water. Then she remembered.
Aryl. He poisoned me. Made me sleep. That, Betrayer, apparently he headed for the Shiverpeaks.
I will hunt him down. Cynn thought as she looked for her ectoplasm and crafting materials she bought in Lions arch. Gone? He used me. Cynn felt a tear she quickly wiped away as she headed for the Shiverpeaks.
No one will see me weak again, No one, no one. Cynn thought as she kept fighting the tears.
After a few days of travelling, eating only what she could find, and sleeping Cynn finally reached the Shiverpeaks. She headed to beacons perch and slept there before she headed to the frost gate.
I will find him.
She asked if anyone had seen him in each town and finally got all the way back to Yak’s bend before getting a trail of him.
“Yes I’ve seen a ranger who matches your description. He was headed to droknars forge.”
A dwarf told her.
”Droknars forge?” Cynn asked with a stare as if the dwarf was insane.
”The Deldrimor dwarves center of power. It has never been taken by…”
Cynn interrupted “…Which way?” She asked earning an annoyed glare from the dwarf.
“That way,” The dwarf said and pointed, obviously annoyed with Cynn’s disinterest.
”Thanks,” Cynn shouted as she ran in the direction the dwarf had pointed.
The dwarf sent her an evil stare before heading off.
The gates slowly opened. A dark figure was walking in clinging to its staff. It was a female; her blonde hair was wild and untamed. The normal colourful human face could not be seen, instead there was a white fragile lifeless face.
Cynn blinked once with her eyes. She took a few coins up from her pocket, went to the nearest house and rented a room for the night.
Next morning Cynn blissfully woke up, feeling stronger than she had the whole journey.
She bought a few things to eat and headed deeper into Droknars forge to look for Aryl.
He will pay for betraying my trust. Damnit!
After a while of staring, Cynn saw him standing close to a Xunlai guild agent.
There he is Cynn thought as she proudly walked after him, her clothes looking like rags and her cracked staff in her hand.
She just stood still gathering her anger in her central point making her able to control it and making her whole eyes glow with a frightening crystal blue.
Then she approached him. He heard her, looked at her with fright in his eyes, and whispered, “Cynn?”
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Well I got a few things and stuff to tell. Firstly the first part of this story was written in my summer vacation. School’s started not to long ago for me and I’ve needed to make homework and integrate my time to school again. This has taken up a good chunk of my time lately, but now when it’s over and I’ve cancelled one of my other stories due to lack of interest: I should be able to get a lot more work done on this story than I have lately.
Cookies to the people who find the star wars remarks in here.
Without further ado: (Except this :) Let the story begin!
Cynn stared at Aryl. Determined not to loose any ground. Aryl’s green eyes flicked around him, like they were trying to flee. “Then we meet again,” Cynn sneered. “Had a pleasant journey? All planned out I guess.” She made that remark because of Aryl’s clothes: Unlike Cynn’s his clothes were as good as new. Not ragged. If Cynn hadn’t known better she would have believed Aryl to have teleported to Droknars forge.
Aryl quickly turned around grabbed something from the hands of the Xunlai agent and ran to the nearest exit. “You’re going nowhere!” Cynn screamed as she ran after him.
Aryl kept running towards Kryta like his strength was infinite. Cynn kept following him. But her muscles were weak and not as trained as Aryls. Her strength was depleting rapidly. The only way she managed to keep running was because of sheer willpower.
How can... How is it possible? He should be long tired by now! That strength is inhuman!
Cynn was lacking the strength to follow Aryl. She finally collapsed into the snow, just lying there.
Everything turns black for her…
The next thing Cynn remembers is lying at the hill she used to be at in Kryta, with Aryl looking at her. What a nice last dream…She thinks and closes her eyes. She feels a sharp pain in the left side of her wrist, something is kicking her. Cold claws are ripping up her torso. She feels blood everywhere on her. Is dead really this painful? She hears a few noises and feels something warm on her right cheek. She feels her last strength getting sapped from her and everything turns black.
”Wake up. Wake up Cynn!” She hears a muffled voice. She opens her mouth and fills her lounges with hot air. “Thank Dwayma. She’s still alive!” Cynn slowly opened her eyes, the light blinded her. She blinked a few times and her eyes accustomed to the light. She actually was on the hill in Kryta: And Aryl actually stood and looked over her. Aryl! This was his entire fault! She was just about to open her mouth to tell him to ‘sod off’ when he put his finger down on her red lips and whispered “shh.” She slowly turned her head and saw a wooden trace on her right side with some food on. She took a piece of meat and put it in her mouth. She cared nothing about being noble now. She was hungry as hell. After having eaten a few pieces of meat, and drunk a few mouthfuls of water Cynn returned to her deep slumber.
She lay so comfortably, did she have to wake up now? I need an explanation. Now! She thought as she got on her legs, and sat her hair to its usual position. She looked around and saw Aryl talking to a few villagers. She picked up her staff noticing it was broken and totally useless. She focused to create a fireball in her hand to see how much strength she had; but nothing happened.
My power’s gone! It’s gone Damnit! She thought as she ran down to the settlement to get an explanation from Aryl. As she approached him Aryl turned his head towards her and smiled a gentle smile.
Cynn ran up to him and sent him a stern glare while asking “Why the bloody hell did you poison and leave me?”
”I heard from one of the villagers that today was your birthday. So I gave you sleep poison took them to Droknars Forge to get them crafted to a staff for you.” Aryl replied smiling smug smile.
Cynn’s face turned red. I can’t even remember my own birthday. How embarrassing is that?
”All accusation and thoughts are forgiven,” Aryl remarked. “But we have a different problem. Some madman in the mountains is running around with a sceptre attacking people. After you passed out he attacked you. I ran up to defend you and I got him chased away. But before he left he cast some strange spell over you. It was like the sceptre sucked some of your life force out.”
”That’s bad,” said Cynn. “I can’t use my magic powers anymore. He must have sucked them out.”
Aryl looked thoughtful for a moment before replying. “I’ve heard of one sceptre capable of that. And that’s only a legend. But if it’s true then he must have found the sceptre of Terrak’Lina.”
Cynn pondered about this for a moment before saying: “He’ll be almost impossible to find in those mountains. I need to get my magic power back before we’ll even have a chance of finding him.”
Aryl nodded. “I know how” he said. “I’ve heard rumors of a warp in time and space. I believe someone found a way to manipulate the mists to create his own little world in ours. I believe that the entrance is somewhere in the forest.”
This is madness. Complete pure madness. But I got nothing to lose so bring it on’ Cynn thought as she and Aryl headed off to find the entrance.
After hours of travelling Cynns feet started to hurt. Not wanting to give in, she kept moving.
”Having trouble keeping up eh?” Aryl teased her. Cynn punched him lightly on the shoulder.
”Shut up!” She sneered.
”Looks like we’re here now.” Aryl commented. Cynn looked around. The treetops covered most of the sky but occasionally the sun could be seen glinting on the river in front of them. The water was a shade of pale blue. “It’s strange… We haven’t encountered one single monster here. This place usually crawls with them. I have a bad feeling about this.” Cynn commented.
Aryl ignored Cynn’s comment and jumped into the water. “It’s nice and hot’” He shouted up.
My clothes are gonna get wet. Cynn thought as she jumped into the water. She felt weird.
Cynn felt a tingling in her whole body as she collapsed into the water. “Cynn..? Cynn! What’s wrong?” Aryl asked and ran up to Cynn. He took his hand on her cheek to check if she was too hot but she was gone. “Cynn! CYNN!” He shouted into the air.
Cynn found herself in a small town. She looked around. The only thing she found distinctively strange was a huge castle to the west. She had never heard about any castle near Kryta.
Wait a second. Where am I? Cynn asked herself. By pure reflex she started to walk up to the castle not even noticing that she did it herself.
What is this blasted place? Is this the school Aryl talked about? Aryl! He must be worried like hell… She didn’t reach to think anymore because she knocked her head against a big wooden door. She looked up and saw it was the castle doors; they were made of massive wood. They opened slowly. Cynn walked inside and were greeted by an old man. “I sense you have come here to regain your magical power. This is a school where we train sorcerers.”
”Uh. Thanks.” Cynn said confused.
”Come on in. We train intensively here. We require you to do your best.”
“Umm, okay.” Said Cynn as she walked inside.
”You’ll be assigned to room 231. Have a nice day.”
”Got it.” Cynn said and walked off.
Apparently those strange wizards don’t have any lessons. I’m already starting to like this place.
She quickly found room 231 and walked inside. It was neatly equipped with a bed and a few drawers. There also was a pedestal with a floating blue crystal and a letter. As Cynn moved closer to the crystal to get the letter she felt her strength replenish. She tried to cast any of her regular spells but all that came was small sparks and smoke.
Apparently my old spells don’t work anymore. I’ll just have to learn some new I guess.
Cynn went out of her room. This place must have a library of some sorts. She saw two males in conversation in a corner. They were both around twenty. Cynn walked up to them and interrupted: “Does any of you know where the library is?”
One of the males stared at her obviously annoyed that she had interrupted their conversation.
The other stared at her interested and smirked. “That ways miss…” He said and pointed to a small corridor. “Cynn” she said and walked off. The one with the smirk on mumbled a few words and a cracking noise were heard from Cynn’s bra. Damnit! She said as it fell off. She quickly picked it up and put it on place while the two teens were laughing at her. She quickly moved on to get away from them. She headed off through the corridor and found herself in a huge room with books and people reading everywhere. She walked into a bookshelf and took the first book she found.
”How to make a proper farting spell” Awkward, she thought as she took another book out.
”How to clean stuff up.” Strange, but useful.
”Focus on the object or point at it with your staff or wand. Now look at the object, when it’s clean, in your mind. Now mutter ‘Cleanio.’ ”
What a strange way to perform magic, Cynn thought as she closed the book. This might just be a bit hard to learn.
Cynn sighed and sat down in a soft chintz chair. She moaned a bit. It was so soft. Her last conscious though was that she had to try that cleaner spell sometime. Then sleep claimed her.
Cynn woke up in a nice chair. She slowly blinked with her pale blue eyes, and got on her feet.
She slowly walked up to a window and looked at the sun. She concluded that it must’ve been somewhere in the early morning. A few morning readers had already gotten up and started to read.
Cynn mentally made a note to look after a training hall sometime. There must be some kind of food around here. Cynn thought as she looked around for anything that could be eaten.
As no food showed up Cynn left the library in her quest of food. She walked up and down in a few corridors. There where wizards and sorcerers everywhere. They were all in conversation with eachother and Cynn didn’t dare to ask, perhaps she’d get the same treatment as she’d gotten last time she interrupted. She didn’t feel like having anymore of her clothes rip.
She finally saw a lone wizard; it looked like he wasn’t doing anything so Cynn ventured forth to ask him. Her hunger was killing her. As she walked closer to him she saw he was muttering an incantation. …”Incantato flamiu extremito!”… The words got higher and higher and the last words were almost screamed. Sparks came in his right hand and they started to glow into a flame. The wizard bowed a bit back and held his other arm before his eyes to shield them from whatever was coming. Cynn did the same. Whatever’s gonna happen then it ain’t gonna be good for my eyes. She thought as small flames started to burst out from the mage’s hand. They started to glow bigger and stronger. Then it all turned into an inferno. Blinding white light came from his hand and a huge pillar of flames stood out from it burning itself into the wall. The mage was grunting in exhaustion as Cynn watched amazed, as good as she could while still shielding her eyes against too much of the harsh white light. Then the light started to subside and the pillar of fire got smaller and smaller until it disappeared in a pillar of smoke. The mage fell down on his knees grunting heavily.
I’ve never seen anything like that in my whole life! Cynn thought as she warily stepped closer.
”Impressive magic,” she complimented. The mage was still breathing heavily, paying no notice to Cynn.
How rude! Cynn thought.
