View Full Version : Character Deletion/Swipe

I know there a character swipe before the final release of course but exactly how much will be erased? Of course we all go back to level 1 and we all have basic items but will things like my guild, guild hall, and guild cape be gone?
I really dont want to see my perfect armor and my great bow go away but I guess I will get it back eventually.
Of course another question is why should they do character swipes?
It could be a neat way for them to thank us for buying the preorder and just think how great it will be to start the game out with a automatic lv 15-20 character. :\

These beta weekends are for thanking us for preordering, giving us items for our characters is for thanking us for preordering, giving us lvled characters and letting us keep our BWE armor and weaponry is not fair to those who couldn't get one, or wanted to wait til it was out.
I would like to know if the guilds are going to be wiped before release though

I'm gonna give some hear say here but I'm of the understanding that the only thing that will be saved for you is your characters names. Every single thing else will be just like starting from day one.
Us keeping our names was the reward we got for preorder. I think its only fair anyway. I've not been worrying about trying to get all those runes and crafting armor and things just for this reason. I didn't want to have 100+ hours invested in a character and have it wiped anyway. At release I'll savor the opportunity to relax and take the missions at my pace while building my character and not be thinking, man this sucks I shouldn't have to do this again, blah blah blah.

Sorry I didnt see the other post on this subject. Delete this if you want.
Also it was just an idea and the :\ at the end meant that it was cool but not likely to happen lol
Will my characters still exist when Guild Wars releases?
Yes, if you have played in a Beta Weekend Event, your character will carry over to the release version of Guild Wars.
Will my characters be wiped when Guild Wars is released?
No, your characters will not be wiped. That is, they will not be removed from the servers because if you have played in any of the Beta Weekend Events, your character names are reserved through the character itself. However, the characters will by necessity be reset to starting levels and they will possess starting skills and items.
As to why characters are wiped after a beta: Some games don't do that. For instance, Lineage 2 wiped characters after their Closed Beta, but the characters from Open Beta were not wiped.
Personally, I rather the wipe. Why? Because aside from a few folks whining, it keeps beta players a bit more open-minded in their "testing". I mean, think about it... if you were going to be keeping your character and items through release, would you feel free to "explore" things as much? Would you let curiosity drive you, or would you be worried about being uber?
Also, wiping after a Beta ensures that ANY advantages gained from an exploit or bug in the testing period are gone. Once a bug is fixed, that doesn't mean its effects are nullified. People can gain money, armor, weapons, experience, etc through bugs and exploits.
Not wiping characters at release is also like punishing those who decided to wait until the game was actually in-store to buy, or those who didn't hear about GW until it was on the shelves.
There are a lot more reasons, I'm sure... but those are just off the top of my head. I know you may think it kinda sucks to have to "do over"... but please refer to my sig. You should be more than willing... hell, you should be happy to redo everything. The second time around you'll know more, you'll be faster, you'll have friends and you'll know of guides, quests, and other things. You'll zip right through.
A Beta that is wiped means you have unlimited options to do whatever you want, try whatever you want... and you never have to think that you'll pay for it later. You just use the time to learn.
Have fun! That's what games are for.

I personaly knew that after this last Beta Weekend I was only gonna have the character for one more, so I didn't worry so much about lvling the character or getting new Equipment. I just went on quests with friends and joined in on a Naked Dance Party or two that happened to be going on during the last day.

If we could keep just the gold

If we could keep just the gold
Then nobody would bother outfitting their characters now and the game experience during the beta would be lessened because everyone' dying on later levels.

Hello,
I'll keep my name that is great for me.
All start new, and fresh.
Keep Guilds names, and capes.
See you all in game.
Cheers

I am actually hoping they do a character swipe or deletion to the point that your character is back to the level where he or she was at character creation. Why? Because that way I can try various profession combinations and decide if I want to take certain professions as second profession or stay pure. I began to realize soon after taking the monk profession as a second profession for my elementalist that I didn't like it. I may change my find at the next BWE, but if I don't it would be nice if they did swipe the character so I can start fresh and just go pure. I know I can always just delete him, but I would rather not. The same is true with my ranger. I gave him elementalist as a second profession, but have found I don't really use the skills that much, sometimes I even forget about them for both characters.

Hrm. Might have just missed it, but has ArenaNet made mention of what's to be done with the guilds upon release?
Reset? Unadultered? Third option?

I have heard that guilds will also be whiped, so that you will have to rejoin or recreate your guild.

Now I don't feel so bad about "wasting" all my time in the arena :P

first of all, that's rediculously unfair.
seconds, everything except for your characters name and basic appearance will be whiped. that's right. your guild is gone. your armour is gone. your skills are gone. you are in the Kingdom of Ascalon at level 1 and nothing's happened yet.

How about making an entire beta list of all the guilds and its members on a website somewhere. That way we can keep track of what guild name belongs to who after they are wiped out on game release?
But it's just a way of saying "I've got dibs on this name", and many unscrupulous players just wouldn't respect that. Hmm. Can't think of another way except to log on as early as possible to officially claim your guild. :P

Good to know that the guilds will be whipped. I was going to spend all of the last beta working on the guild aspect, but now I can just work on my character builds. I have some research to do on Mesmers and Necros.
Character wipe is fair. We get to try the game before it comes out, we get a free weapon, we get to reserve our names, we get access to special areas right off the bat, we get to have a jump on everyone who didn't pre-order.
We get enough.

I know and fully understand and stupport the idea of deleting the characters back to lv1. I said it with my first post and im saying it now, im ok with the character deletion and dont try to twist my words around. It was just a idea that popped into my head at the moment since I am 100% happy with my character but it really doesnt matter because it will only take me 4-5 days to get back to where I am.
Sheesh with all the complaining and whining going on in this forum these days I
am almost ready to give up on this forum and just wait until the game comes out. I really liked you guys in the start because you rarely flamed and told it as it is but now its getting annoying. Sorry if I seem maybe a little overly angry (my soccer team lost a match to another team because of the stupid referees stupid calls so im a little annoyed today).

They did a charecter wipe before one of the bwe (i think before janurarys?) anyways, all the charecters weres till at ur charecter selection screen, but they were all warrior twins. You then selected the one with the name you wanna use, clik create, and create your charecterm i think this is how they will do it before release

Peronally the only thing I'll miss is my skills, I managed to get some pretty rare skills that you can't necessarilly find quite so early - usually. :( I know I'll get them all back though, not quite as early maybe . . . but eventually. :)

Does anyone know whats going on on the 27th? Like, it that considered a beta, so everything you do then will be wiped the next day, making our free-day worthless. Or will it be after the wipe so we get a true head-start? I just need to know if were going to throw everything away in the april BWE or on the 27th.

I believe they will throw everything away after the beta on the 18th or whatever then on the 27th we will be starting the game for real...

yea and i think that extra day would be a good time to work at getting guilds back and if everyone does that then the guilds will be the same as they were during the bwe's for the regular release
