Collectors in Kingdom of Ascalon
The monsters in Guild wars occasionally drop monster items that can be traded with collectors to get other items.

In the Kingdom of Ascalon the only items worth trading for are the belt pouch and slightly better armor. The Belt pouch gives 5 extra inventory slots and is a must for any player. The easiest way to get the Belt Pouch is to collect 5 Skale fins and give it to Collector Brownlow right outside Ascalon City next to Lina the Healer. Alternatively you can also collect 5 worn belts and get a belt pouch from Collector Humpherys in Ashford Village but Skale fins are easier to find then worn belts.

The Armor from the collectors in Pre-seering is only slightly better (+2) than the starting armor and is significantly weaker the armor crafted in post seering Ascalon. My recommendation is to not to put too much effort getting the collectors armor in the Kingdom of Ascalon and instead buy a salvage kit as soon as you can so you will have the necessary items and money to forge new armor after the seering.

Depending on your primary class different collectors will offer you different armor.

OMG! You rock!

This is a fantastic tool for newbies... I'd suggest changing the name to "Quests in the Kingdom of Ascalon" or something, and stickying it. Thanks so much on behalf of everyone who will ever do those quests!

I think a great idea (I'd be willing to do it next BWE if nobody has yet) would be to take Moomanibe's map and mark each of the profession trainers on it. That way folks would know exactly how to get where they need to go to get all the free skills they can before going through the Academy (after which you have to spend points and money for skills you could have gotten for free).

Great work!

Only 2 mesmer trainers were listed in the first post. This varies... if you start your character out as a Mesmer primary it's actually 3 Mesmer trainers. The first ("Sebedoh") being just outside the city portal after you talk to Sir Tydus. But in the end you learn the same Mesmer skills so this is only a minor sidenote.

For those of us who explored Pre-seared Ascalon, do you remember any unofficial sidequests that don't show up on the quest log, but they're there for fun. Like the bear-hunter mini quest in the forest somewhere south of Fort Ranik. You walk up to one of the 5 drunken bear hunters and they give you a challenge. If you kill a bear and come back under 3 minutes, they give you "Hunter's Ale". I think it's drinkable, dumb me I forgot to try its effects before bwe ended. Then they sing a hunter's song in unison in your honor as they recite your name. lol They're a comical bunch. One goes off a few yards and keeps falling on his ass in a drunken stupor. You can really see the humorous side of the devs poking out through this.

Edit:
Well here's a rough approximation of where I think these hunters can be found at:
http://img237.exs.cx/img237/4682/bhunterpath8fd.gif (http://img237.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img237&image=bhunterpath8fd.gif)

There's another way to get there by climbing through some hills, but it takes longer. Now that I think of it, do you think each bear hunter represents one of the devs? That would be funny. And yes, I think "easter egg" is the best way to describe this quest, too. I don't see that word often so I just forgot about it. :)

This Trainer is a Character I give the Generic term "Primary Skill Trainer" basically there is one for every class they are always right outside Ascalon on new charchters. They all give the same Quest kill some River scales and their skills usually overlap with Trainer #1 but usually have a skill unique to them in pre seering Ascalon. I think I listed this Quest under the quest Prepare Yourself. I should probabaly Move this up from non-skill quests to Skill trainers. If i added this trainer for Mesmer I would have to add it to ever other class too.

I know of this Quest not sure where I should put it. I think of it as more of a easter egg since I don't remeber if they gave XP and the Hunter's ale doesnt do anything but simulate Drukeness for a few seconds(IE make screen shake)
thoough for completeness sake if you can remember their exact location and the easiest way to get there it would help

I guess i should add this and the Round up the Prize winning Hogs Quest

I guess I'll make some changes to the intial post and add these two "hidden" quests

anyone know if they changed the ranger Skills given by the first trainer in the March BWE?

I had a ranger in Feb BWE for Pre-Ascalon and tried to rememeber everything I could. I thought the 3 skills given by the first ranger trainer was Troll Urgent, dual shot and charm animal. This seemed to be confirmed by many screenshots from the Feb BWE in which i saw all those skills lined up together in many ss meaning most likley this is correct.

the other day i saw the following SS which shows comfort animal in what looks like pre seer Ascalon (i think Breton is one of the drunk bear hunters)
http://gwvault.ign.com/screenshots/?ss=438&view=ss&page=1

so anyone know who gives what ranger skills as of last BWE so I Can update the first post to be more correct?

also if anyone can correct any of the other skills i might have wrong or missing or listed under the wrong trainer feel free to post
(I keep thinking Favorable winds might be a pre-seer skill but havent seen any screen shots of it so it might be my imagination)

Starting Primary Skills: Power Shot, Troll Urgent

I thought you started out with primary skills of :
Power Shot
Dual Shot
Troll Ungent

I may be mistaken, but I thought you started out with 2 attack skills.

Charm animal is given by the trainer in Regent Valley, I don't recall receiving comfort animal from that trainer as a second skill.

OrangeArrow

primary Rangers start with power shot and troll Urgent that is unquestionable I seen too many screenshots of primary rangers with just those 2 skills for it not to be unless it was changed in last BWE but i doubt it. This is kinda confirmed by the order of skills in the IGN screen shot it shows 2 primary skills, 3 from the #1 Elemental trainer, resurrection signet. then comfort and charm animal.

heres a ss from an FEB Beta video with just power shot and troll Urgent

the animal trainer in Regent Valley use to give Troll Urgent, quick shot? and charm animal but the screen shot at the link shows a ranger with comfort animal I think this might be a Change made after feb BWE unless that user in SS got special treatment or was bugged into pre-seer Ascalon(doubt bug since its only a level 7)

Primary Trainers usually have one or 2 skills that overlap with the #1 trainer but usually Primaries End up with 1 Unique skill more than secondaries in pre seer. this unique primary skill for ranger is Power Shot, I havent seen any screenshots of secondary rangers with power shot so this makes sense

My guess on the skills given now are
Primary: Power shot, Troll Urgent
#1 charm Animal, Comfort animal, Troll Urgent
#2 dual shot , point blank shot
#3 read the wind, Ignite arrows

Favorable winds still nagging me but i guess it could be one of the more popular skills picked up in post seer ascalon city In Feb i rememeber more than a few rangers using it in shiverpeaks. But i guess its not starting and they all picked it up from the Ascalon Skill trainer

anyone ID these skills the necromancer one I think is Blood renewal i tried confirming it with skills database available but the pictures havent been updated anywhere

the ranger skill I'm not sure what it is its not power shot or dual shot or point blank shot.

it could be a new graphic for ignite arrows or quick shot but not sure any help would be great
I think this skill is given/use to be given by the first (non primary) Ranger trainer but dont know what it is and might of been replaced with comfort animal as a skill given

I thought sure the Ranger skill was "Dual Shot". But, I'm looking at the www.gwonline.net (http://www.gwonline.net/) skillz images and I don't see that image at all now. Are the skillz icons being changed regularly?

It Probabaly is Dual Shot I thought in my screen shot I already had dual shot in the SKill Bar but it was read the wind.

Read the wind kind of looks like a inverted image of the old Icon for Dual shot

stupid moment for me

from what I know most of the images fansites use for the skills are part of an fansite kit released in 2004 since then a few of the skill icons have changed each BWE.
Since arena.net hasnt released a updated fansite kits most sites still use the old Icons as they are the most clear images out there. hopefully arena net will release a new kit with updated icons before release.

thanks everyone

looks like i got a few more things to add to my to do list in pre-seer ascalon

I thought you started out with primary skills of :
Power Shot
Dual Shot
Troll Ungent

I may be mistaken, but I thought you started out with 2 attack skills.

Charm animal is given by the trainer in Regent Valley, I don't recall receiving comfort animal from that trainer as a second skill.
on second thought you might be right there is a possibilty that rangers start with powers shot and dual shot or quick shot now and get charm animal and comfort animal along with troll urgent from the trainer now. Troll Urgent might not be given by the primary trainer anymore this seems like a possible situation

The ranger skill you are trying to determine is dual shot. I am also fairly sure the player recieves comfort animal rather than dual shot from the frist ranger trainer. Also, the second skill you get from the air magic ele trainer is lightning javelin

Lightning Javelin was the other air ele skill you get from the 2nd Ele Trainer, Blinding Flash is also correct! ;)

I made an observation about the collectors in Pre Searing Ascalon the most items I seen an collector Carry is 6 Items if you include all the normal items and all class specific armor. No one carries more than 6 items. With this In mind the only people that don't carry 6 items are the follow people bettany (5), Jacobs (5), Savich (5), Varis (4) with this in mind I would guess that they carry the missing mesmer items and Elementalist's Robes.

I hope to check this when game is retail
I'm thinking Bettany has the elementalist robe since its the most out of the way.

I'm really having trouble finding the Necromancer's Tunic. I've been searching all over the Fort area. I've been inside, outside. I've seen 2 collectors out here. One of them was with a bunch of guys playin' some drinking game, another with some rangers. But still, no Findley or whatever.

Anyone got any advice? Maybe a landmark I could look for to help me find him?

Although slightly outdated in some respects, this thread is greatly helpful. A few PSA questions:

1> Was a third Mesmer or Elementalist trainer ever found? I know Monk goes back to Brother Mhenlo for their third set of skills -- perhaps Mesmers or Elementalists do similar?

2> What drops colossal jawbones for the collector in Regent Valley?

1>No, I haven't found more than 2 trainers.

2>This may have changed since the last beta, haven't come across any jawbones recently. (It's possible the Necromancer's tunic was removed from pre-searing and moved to post-searing) But I'm sure OrangeArrow or some other nice individual will let us know soon.

Actually, have you come across collectors that ask for jawbones? This I'm not aware of.

I'm in exactly the same situation -- I think I did the skeleton quest before my ranger signed on to a secondary profession as a monk, or perhaps I had picked monk but hadn't done the previous skill quests, so that may be why Brother Melnho's not giving it again.

All in all, it seems pretty funky...NPCs direct me to people I already trained with when I ask for more information about where to go for more skills (without this guide I wouldn't have found a thing, for sure), I've been trapped several times by my pet in corners, and why is there a red no-entry sign on any artifact/focus item that I equip? I suppose that means it doesn't work even though I can equip it, but why? So many questions, so few answers...

Edit p.s. I got the Tapestry Shard, or whatever it is, from Gwen, who promtly showed how great her affection was for me, next to her wonderful mother, by p@ss!ing off at the soonest possible opportunity. At the moment, ponying up 200gp to buy Gwen a pretty cape seems like it was not a good investement if I only acquire a scrap of cloth about whose purpose I am equally confused. At the very least, I could have got a few beans...

I think that since a Ranger uses a 2 handed weapon, that's why you can't equip an artifact or focus item. I could be wrong as I've only been playing this for a short while now but it would make a little sense. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, my pet has trapped me in a corner as well. Had to jump back to the Abbey and start over the quest that I was on. Wish I could throw a stick or something and tell her to go fetch it. And let me just add my thanks. I'm @ lvl 8 now after only about 6-7 hours of playing. That's not record breaking I know but it would have been days, if this guide was not around. Thanks again!!

They have changed the collectors somewhat since this compilation was prepared in beta.

There are now no collectors for necromancer chest armor. However there are two collectors named Varis that both have necromancer leggings. One is on Fort Ranik, the other is in Regent Valley next to the ranger trainer Ivor Trueshot. Evidently, they are missing one collector by adding two of another.

People are saying the elementalist chest piece is missing also.

5 Warden's Trophies to Collector Hatcher (Fort Ranik or Regent Valley) for Necromancer Boots

Thought it might be helpful to give an exact map location of the "Hunter's Ale" bonus quest. Basically you kill a bear, come back, and they give you a mug of ale. If you drink it, vision starts getting wavy and blurred in places as they tell bad jokes.

You can do this quest more than once, but I've only found 2 bears nearby. The second one yielded a bear pelt quest item, which I'm gonna try doing a search for (I think it was to make Little Thom's cloak, but I've already done that...been a while since I played pre-searing).

It's also of note that a Collector named Hatcher is with the ranger-band trading unnatural seeds for upgraded gloves (Armor 7).

When creating your character you will pick a primary profession. There are 6 professions to choose from, Warrior, Ranger, Monk, Necromancer, Mesmer and Elementalist. Don’t worry about what each one does now, as during creation a description will be available for each. Later on you can do quests for other professions and try out their skills as well as your primary. Before leaving Pre-Searing you will need to choose a second profession, but until you make a commitment you can try all 5 other professions by doing quests for the respective profession trainer. You can create and keep up to 4 different characters at once and if you tire of or don’t like one of your characters you can delete him/her and start a new one.

Your goals:

Gain experience.

Level up.

Gain $$ and better armor/weapons.

Experience

You gain experience from almost every monster you kill as long as they are less than 5 or less levels below your level. Monsters will give you more experience if they are closer to your level and much more if they are above your level. The top level you can achieve is 20 and monsters can be higher than level 20, but in Pre-Searing few monsters are higher than level 3.

You can also gain experience by completing quests. However if you plan on getting to level of 8 or more in Pre-Searing you might want to save collecting your rewards until after you have reached level 6. The reason for this is that the higher the level you gain, the less experience points you accumulate by killing monsters. Once you finish a quest it will be listed in you log (L key). You won’t lose any quest experience as long as you cash in before taking the academy quest and leaving Pre-Searing (you will be warned that you can’t return after taking this quest before you accept it, so make sure you are ready to move on if you do take the quest).

Some quests have you returning or delivering quest item(s), so you might want to finish those whenever possible to free up your backpack/pouch. Your bags, even with the one extra belt pouch you can get from collectors, can only hold up to 25 items (except those items that stack, i.e. unnatural seeds, enchanted loadstones, etc – and I haven’t found a limit to how many will stack in a single slot yet). Regardless you’ll find carrying quest items to be a drain on your available inventory slots so you either finish these quests or decide to wait to even take them on. If a quest has you finding an item that item will be in the game in the same location every time you enter that part of the map.

Leveling

You’ve leveled! Once you gain enough experience you will gain a level and get points to spend on your attributes. Each profession has their own set of attributes. Examples: Rangers get marksmanship, beast mastery, wilderness survival, etc. A warrior gets strength, swordsmanship, axe mastery, etc. The H key will open your hero and you will see the attributes you can increase. Don’t worry about making a mistake because as long as you are in a town you can always raise and LOWER your attributes and make adjustments as necessary. So, for example, as a ranger your first level up gets you 5 points to spend on your attributes. You might decide to increase your marksmanship to as high as you can go, as the higher your marksmanship the more damage your bow does. If you find you want to change your specialty you can do so when ever you are in a town simply by lowering and raising attributes and this you can do as many times as desired until you get it right.

$$ and Equipment

When you kill most monsters they will drop items or gold. You will also get items from opening hidden stashes and completing quests. Some items you will want to collect and trade with collectors (see Collectors below) who will give you armor, weapons or other goodies. Most of items dropped by monsters will have a white description, which means that they are identified and usually common.

However, some creatures and hidden stashes will drop colored items (light blue now and purple, gold or green later in Pos-Searing). These are rare drops and only have partial identities – this is where an ID kit, which you can buy from any merchant (see Merchants below), comes in handy. An ID kit is something you will want to buy when you get your first 100 gold. The easiest way to ID something is to open up all you bags with the F9 key, double click on the ID kit and then single click on the unidentified item and close the bags with F9. Usually identifying an object will increase its value to a merchant, sometimes drastically. Sell any equipment you don’t want or can’t use to any merchant. Some items will identify as precious, this means that the merchant will give you extra money for that item so unless the item is something you can use it is best sold to a merchant.

Monsters also drop things other than weapons; they might drop worn belts, bear pelts, grawl necklaces, unnatural seeds (see Collectors below), grawl armor, etc. Most of these, except quest items, can be sold to a merchant and most will stack in your bags. Many times a monster will drop items that collectors will want to trade you for (see Collectors below).

Dyes are also dropped by monsters. Dyes can be used to change the color of your armor. You will see a value of only 1 gold on dyes and that is all a merchant will give you in Pre-Searing. However, dyes are valuable and very collected, especially silver and black (as of today, 12/21/05, black sells to the dye merchant in Post-Searing for around 7,000 gold). So collect dyes (they will stack per color) and don’t sell them in Pre-Searing unless you really need the gold.

Armor

Can not be crafted in Pre-Searing, it is only gained by trading with collectors (see below). Any armor you get is only for you, no one else can wear it. And the same goes for anyone else, so never buy armor or trade (see Trading below) for it from anyone as you won’t be able to use it.

Weapons

Only a few weapons can be crafted in Pre-Searing by the crafter in Ascalon City. Most weapons you will get by picking up drops or by trading with other players (see Trading below). Weapons can be customized for you for just a few gold pieces (10) at the weapons “merchant” and will add an additional 20% damage to their damage attributes. However, once a weapon is customized it can not be used by another player so be careful about trading them or for them. A customized weapon can be sold to any merchant, although the gold you spent to customize them won’t be reimbursed.

Merchants

Merchants are found in every city. Hold down your alt key to see a list of all NPC (non-player characters). They don’t sell equipment or armor but things like ID kits, and salvage kits, dye remover, and some other items. They will, however, buy most equipment from you.

ID kits are used to identify unidentified items. Salvage kits are used to get the raw materials from items. e.g. you might salvage an iron ingot from a sword. These raw materials can be used by crafters to create armor or weapons - mostly in the next part of the game (Post-Searing) – however there is one crafter in Pre-Searing in Ascalon City and for the right materials and some gold he can make you a few things but nothing you can’t really find in drops AND he can not craft armor.

Collectors

Collectors are computer characters that want something specific in return for the items they are trading. Examples: Just outside Ascalon City is Brownlow and he will trade either a belt pouch that or a Devourer’s egg for 5 skale fins. In Fort Ranik the collector Hatcher wants 5 unnatural seeds for his the chest armor he has. If you haven’t collected any or all of the seeds Hatcher wants you might find someone selling extra seeds nearby. A seeds value to a merchant is 3 gold, you can sell seeds to them but you can’t buy seeds from them. Traders (other human players – see Traders below) might sell extra seeds they have collected for 10g apiece. Since Brownlow is outside a city you won’t find any traders nearby and you will have to go into a city to see if anyone is selling trading skale fins or belt pouches. Look at the list of collectors one of the other poster made above this post to see a what a collector trades, etc.

Humans

Humans are only seen inside cities (unless you are in a party). Once you exit a city you go into a part of the game specifically set aside for you or your party. In Pre-Searing you can only take one extra player with you so your party can only be 2 people. Dropped items are reserved for only one or the other player, gold is reserved for the party and no mater who picks it up, it is split between the party. To party with someone you click on them and in the lower left side of the screen that person’s name appears with a + by it, click on the + and you will invited the person into your party. If you haven’t talked with then in chat previously they will probably click reject and will not party with you. You have the same option to reject an unsolicited invite from someone else. You can also get out of a party while in a city by clicking on the leave button in the lower left box.

Trading

Trading is done with other human players and only in cities. Traders will usually announce what they have for sale via the chat window. wts = want to sell. wtb = want to buy. If you read of something of interest you can click on that person and a trade button will appear at the top of the screen. If the player accepts the trade session a window will open up. Trading is a multi step process and is never final until both parties agree, so don’t be afraid to try it out. The basic steps are make an offer, submit an offer and accept the offer. To offer items, drag an item from your inventory (F9 opens all bags) into the trade screen. To offer gold you either use the up arrows in the gold selection or click on the number area and type in your offer. Once you’ve finished you hit submit. Any item offered is seen in the trade window just like the items in your own inventory – you can check out to see if you are being sold what was advertised, see if it has been customized (thus you can’t use it) or whether or not if you qualify to use it. Once the offer is accepted on the other end you will get the chance to cancel or accept the offer – both parties must accept the trade for it to become final.

Last but not least, Inventory

The I key will bring up your inventory window. Beside your character on the right are 5 armor slots – these can only hold armor specific for the body area. On the left you’ll see 3 slots: 1 that holds a weapon, 1 that holds a shield or energy enhancer, and 1 for a cape. You’ll only get a cape when joining or creating a guild that has one. Weapons can be one handed or two. If you have a 2 handed weapon equipped, such as a bow, then the 2nd weapon slot will not be active even though you can put a shield or energy enhancer in it (there will be a \ though the item letting you know it isn’t active).

When you start you will have 20 slots available to store items in your backpack. If your backpack isn’t open in the inventory window simply click on the backpack and you will see all 20 slots. You can get additional 5 slot belt pouches from collectors and by trading for them; however, you can only equip one pouch for a total of 25 slots. You can’t put stuff in a pouch and then remove the pouch and store it in an open slot in your backpack – nice thought though. If you have both a backpack and belt pouch (and later on more bags) you can open up all bags with the F9 key. This makes it easy, for example, to use an ID kit located in your backpack on an item located in the belt pouch. Pressing F9 again will close all bags.

the night before last I saw someone who was LV 20 in pre-searing. He was at Fort Ranik....!

S
Last guy I saw at level 20 in Pre had died almost 200,000 times, as to get points above level 12 or so you have to get the Char to level higher. Therfore you get them to chase you back to resurect spot, let them kill you, resurect, get killed again , resurect, get killed again, etc. This allows the char to gain levels and when you finally do kill them you can gain points. When I asked him how long it took he said 2 1/2 months. Oh well, you got to give him credit for the effort.
